About This Product

Made in Philadelphia around 1930, the Turner & Harrison #229 Oval Point Pen is a silver-plated, relatively inflexible dip pen with an upturned, "oval" point. Oval point, or upturned point, pens were made for easy, everyday use.

Unlike pointed pens, the tip of an oval point pen was inserted into an additional press, forming the end of the nib into a small bowl shape and turning the sharp tip upward. Rather than writing with the very tip, you're meant to use the bent area to write. This requires holding the pen at a shallower angle, but provides a writing surface that does not snag or dump ink easily. This type of pen is an excellent choice for beginners.

The #229 pens in our stock were made approximately 90 years ago. Like all of our vintage nibs, it is in new condition, individually inspected and packaged here in our St. Louis offices.

As with any dip pen, you will need to remove the protective coating so that ink will stick to the nib consistently. To remove the coating, simply dip your new pen in ink a couple of times and wipe it off. Repeat until the ink coats the nib completely and doesn't bead up. This process takes about 15 seconds and only needs to be done once, before you use the pen for the first time.

Sold individually. Made in the United States.
